Rathcon Lake is 8.5 acres and is stocked with top quality rainbow trout. The lake is fly fishing only and designed to allow maximum fishing so that 90% of the water can be covered. The average depth is 10ft with deep holes of up to 20ft in places. The fishery is open all year round and is home to a wide range of fly life, in particular buzzers, sedges, hawthorn and daddylonglegs, all providing excellent dry fly fishing, especially in the summer evenings.

Rathcon Lake’s natural appearance and diverse layout sets it apart from other stocked fisheries. The lake is stocked predominantly with triploid rainbows with good fin and tail condition. The fish quickly become accustomed to the lake’s abundant feeding and thrive in these conditions, becoming as close to wild as possible. Along with the lush wetland and woodland surroundings overlooked by the Wicklow Mountains, anglers can enjoy a truly special day’s fishing.

Fishing report August 2010

After a very quiet July, the fishing has picked up again during the past week. The last couple of nights (12th August) has produced a decent surface rise with plenty of sedge hatching. It is encouraging to see the trout up on top again after spending the past while gorging on fry. Parts of the lake remain quite weedy but their is still plenty of areas where fishing is weed free. Few double figure fish have been landed recently with most averaging about 4-5 lbs. The damsel fly nymph has been very successful when fishing the deep holes and fry imitations also were productive.

The recent rise has seen anglers switch to daddy longlegs, brown sedges, emergers and floating fry. Alan Ingram had a great day last weekend landing seven fish all to dries and Bobby Russell followed this up with eight the next day, the biggest of which was 8 pounds. I expect the water clarity to improve and conditions to get better as we get into September

Rathcon Winter League Final 2010

The final of the Rathcon Winter League Fishing Competition was held on Sunday the 21st of March. 15 anglers qualified for the event with 13 turning out for the day. It was a bright sunny day with a south easterly wind.

The first hour was surprisingly quiet with only 5 fish landed. Graham Reynolds got off to a good start with two nice fish on his first peg. Plenty of fish could be seen moving in the shallows but wouldn’t t look at any fly presented to them.

During the next hour there was more action, with Noel Shiels and Rohan Mooney particularly successful on epoxy buzzers. Paul Owens landed a beautiful 10lb trout also fishing a team of buzzers. The eventual winner, Paul Kay stuck to a sinking line with a home tied orange and yellow lure with silver tail. By the end of the five hours fishing, 33 fish were landed. The results for the day were:

1st Paul Kay – 7 fish

2nd Noel Shiels – 6 fish

3rd Rohan Mooney – 6 fish

4th Paul Owens – 4 fish

Many thanks, to Southside Angling for their support throughout the competitions and sponsoring of prizes.
